The Public Hospital, built in 1773, stayed open as well. The Reverend W. A. R. Goodwin was rector of Bruton Parish Church from 1903 to 1907. Recognizing the historical importance of the town of Williamsburg, he persuaded his friend, philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr., to become involved in his vision to restore and preserve its history.
