Rationalizing Medical Work: Decision-Support Techniques and Medical Practices by Marc Berg, Our response to the skyrocketing cost and nonuniform delivery of medical care has been a call for the rationalizing of medical practice through decision-support techniques. These tools, which include protocols, decision analysis, and expert systems, have generated much debate. Advocates argue that they will make medical practice more rational, more uniform, and more efficient and that they will transform the "art" of medical work into a "science." Critics argue that formal tools cannot and should not supplant humans in most real-life tasks. Marc Berg takes the issues raised by advocates and critics as points of departure for investigation, rather than as positions to choose from. Drawing on insights and methodologies from science and technology studies, he attempts to understand what "rationalizing medical practices" means: what these tools do and how they work in concrete medical practices. Rather than take a stand for or against decision-support techniques, he shows how they transform medical practices and discusses what is gained and what is lost. Berg investigates how new discourses on medical work and its problems are linked to the development of decision-support tools. Studying the construction of several individual technologies, he looks at what medical work consists of and how the new technologies figure in and transform it. Although he focuses on decision-support techniques in the field of medicine, the issues he raises are relevant wherever rationalizing techniques are being debated or constructed. Touching upon broader issues of standardization, universality, localization, and the politics of technology, Berg addresses problems that are central to medical sociology, technology studies, and tool design.
Medical and Dental Space Planning by Jain Malkin, THE DEFINITIVE REFERENCE ON MEDICAL AND DENTAL OFFICE DESIGN, IN A NEW EDITION, FOCUSING ON THE TECHNOLOGY WAVE THAT IS TRANSFORMING HOW PHYSICIANS AND DENTISTS PRACTICE " This book has been a definitive reference on space planning of medical and dental facilities for decades. Its timely new edition will keep designers and practitioners ahead of the challenging developments transforming today’ s healthcare facilities and practices." --Bill Rostenberg, FAIA, FACHA//SmithGroup, Incorporated " The field of advanced reproductive technology is relatively new. This book is the first to detail the complexities of designing to meet the clinical needs and the maze of compliance issues." --David Smotrich, MD//Smotrich Center for Reproductive Enhancement Medical and Dental Space Planning is an indispensable guide to the myriad of details that make a medical or dental practice efficient and productive. The unique needs of more than thirty specialties, as well as primary care, are explained in the context of new technology and the many recent regulatory and compliance issues influencing design. Concepts are also presented for sports medicine facilities, ambulatory surgical centers, endoscopy suites, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging, clinical labs, breast care centers, and large clinics. An " inside look" at what goes on in each specialist’ s office will familiarize readers with medical and dental procedures, how they are executed, and the types of equipment used. Technology has radically altered medical and dental practice: digital radiography, electronic medical records, and digital diagnostic instrumentation all have major implications for facilitydesign. The information is organized to make it easy to use and practical. Program tables accompany each medical and dental specialty to help the designer compute the number and size of required rooms and total square footage for each practice.
