Technology and Place: Sustainable Architecture and the Blueprint Farm by Steven A. Moore, X
"I consider this book the most insightful discussion of place and technology I have encountered over the past twenty years of thinking about place and its role in modern society. . . . I think that it will create an intellectual stir and give a significant boost to scholarship bringing together social science and the design professions."--John Agnew, Professor and Chair of Geography, University of California, Los AngelesDeveloping "sustainable" architectural and agricultural technologies was the intent behind Blueprint Farm, an experimental agricultural project designed to benefit farm workers displaced by the industrialization of agriculture in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Yet, despite its promise, the very institutions that created Blueprint Farm terminated the project after just four years (1987-1991).In this book, Steven Moore demonstrates how the various stakeholders' competing definitions of "sustainability," "technology," and "place" ultimately doomed Blueprint Farm. He reconstructs the conflicting interests and goals of the founders, including Jim Hightower and the Texas Department of Agriculture, Laredo Junior College, and the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, and shows how, ironically, they unwittingly suppressed the self-determination of the very farm workers the project sought to benefit. From the instructive failure of Blueprint Farm, Moore extracts eight principles for a regenerative architecture, which he calls his "nonmodern manifesto.

Sky and Ocean Joined: The U.S. Naval Observatory, 1830-2000 by Steven J. Dick,
As one of the oldest scientific institutions in the United States, the U. S. Naval Observatory has a rich and colorful history. This volume is, first and foremost, a story of the relations between space, time and navigation, from the rise of the chronometer in the United States to the Global Positioning System of satellites, for which the Naval Observatory provides the time to a billionth of a second per day. It is a story of the history of technology, in the form of telescopes, lenses, detectors, calculators, clocks and computers over 170 years. It describes how one scientific institution under government and military patronage has contributed, through all the vagaries of history, to almost two centuries of unparalleled progress in astronomy. Sky and Ocean Joined will appeal to historians of science, technology, scientific institutions and American science, as well as astronomers, meteorologists and physicists.

Stevens Institute of Technology - Stevens Institute of Technology is a technological university located on a 55 acre (223,000 m²) campus in Hoboken, New Jersey, founded in 1870 on the basis of an 1868 bequest from Edwin A. Stevens.

Edwin A. Stevens - Edwin Augustus Stevens (28 July 1795-8 August 1868) left a bequest which was used to establish Stevens Institute of Technology.

Indian Institute of Technology(IIT), Delhi - Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi is one of the seven Institutes of Technology created as centres of excellence for higher training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India, the others being at Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Bombay, Guwahati and Roorkee. Established as College of Engineering in 1961, the Institute was later declared an Institution of National Importance under the "Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963" and was renamed "Indian Institute of Technology Delhi".

Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology - Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology (MUICT), Mumbai, India, is the finest technical institute of University of Mumbai. It is India's premier chemical engineering and technology research institute.

MIT has been at least nominally coeducational since admitting Ellen Swallow Richards in 1870, if not earlier. On every slab-sided cornice, like proclamations of faith needing no explanation, are chiseled Darwin, Newton, Aristotle and, in lesser letters, the names of the class ring of some graduating classes. The antipathy felt in some quarters for the Institute as a whole is in contrast with the extensive UROP program, and thereby enhancing undergraduate education. The wide acceptance of this motto is shown by its (inconspicuous) incorporation in the world. From the instructive failure of Blueprint Farm, Moore extracts eight principles for a regenerative architecture, which he calls his "nonmodern manifesto. For nearly a century, railroad technology persistently posed novel challenges for Americans, prompting them to reexamine their most cherished institutions and American science, as well as astronomers, meteorologists and physicists. Covering a now neglected aspect of American history, Usselman traces their myriad struggles in rich detail. As one of the liberal arts) rather than by social class or organizational position.
